Whiteout

As I write the sky is dark and full of the long threatened snow which is now falling and lying, the earlier flurries having melted away.

From the radio and TV there is general chaos already caused by the high winds so add the snow and we will be wiser to stay in bed.

Made it to Bonnyrigglast night, which was interesting , a new perception on a theme, and afterwards nipped down to Musselburgh to see Robbie @ koala hugger. Good news though, Chris from the Council is now a proud daddy, his good lady giving birth to a 7lb boy in the afternoon. Chris is going to "wet the bairns heid" on Friday afternoon at the Sportsmans.

On the way home found that there was now yet another set of traffic lights causing chaos on the A701` at Ploverhall, so when I checked on the web I found that the whole road from Penicuik to Straiton is going to be turned into a giant mass of roadwords from now till April. It is a total shambles, add to that the fact that the Roslin Glen road is closed totally now due to subsidance, and everyone else heads in on the A702, looks as though the plan is to cut off the City.

On another subject I heard that Lothian and Borders Police have now set minimum targets for their offficers, four charge reeports a month!! - for years it was always rumoured to be the case, but never was till now. It does not sound much, OK in the City where you fall over cases all the time but not so in the County where it is quieter and Police still have to "Police by consent".

The lovely "Princess Kerrin" was working in "The Sportsmans" this morning, was missing me and wondering when I would next appear. Soon I said, as I am now back to nearly 100% and will be doing more shifts there to help out.

Went in to do a cash and carry run in town this morning and on arriving at the Mercat found yet another set of roadworks right outside the pub, so I have no idea what we will do when they shut the road for a planned twenty weeks, the deliverymen will be delighted having to drag barrels through the roadworks.

Stir crazy woman

Sun was up and shining this morning, although it was cold. Mrs B. felt up to a trip out having been nowhere other than the Hospital and Doctors since 29th Dec, so we headed through to Livingston.

Had a short wander around a couple of shops in McArthur Glen, which was enough for the first trip, had a late breakfast in Wetherspoon's, and then did a grocery run in Asda - but that was just stretching it a bit. Home by 2 p.m. and it was a quiet afternoon for Ann.

I am now heading off to Bonnyrigg where I plan to find out what happens at Eastern Star meetings.

the thingsdwe do at home

Had a long day , left at 0800 to go to Musselburgh, took an hour to get there as I was stuck for `15 minutes to travel the last half mile.

Graham, Robbie and myself all on site at 0900, they had a meeting I just got on with it. Long day as it was fairly quiet, but there was always someone in and it was nice to see some new faces who seemed happy with the place. Couple of the boys had good results with the horses, picking up on three favourites p.m.

Got home twenty minutes before Ann's brother Tom and his wife Isobel arrived to see her. Nice to see them but annoyed at their tans as they have just had a nice week in Benidorm where the weather was good.

Tonights heading - we were talking in the pub today about folks who do odd things at home, which got me to thinking back - the guy who built a chopper trike motor bike in his livingroom, another who built a Morris Minor in his upstairs room then had the wall demolished and the car removed by crane; building a house around a caravan and then cutting up the caravan; a boat in the livingroom which they could not get out ; a boy who pitched a tent in the loft and lived there for months; but my true story was going to interview a man in Penicuik. I was at in his kitchen talking to the wife and she said he was in the garden shed, I was looking into the garden but saw no shed. He had built a shed in his bedroom and was living in it !! while she slept in the bed beside it. I once stripped down a motor bike in my mothers kitchen, she was not amused and eventually had it put out inm the bucket - with foresight - it was a "whispering" Velocette, shaft drive and now mega collectable.

Council playing even bigger silly buggers with Ann - so shortly the gloves will need to come off.

The nightly swarm

As promised this is the nightly swarm, which bombards our cars with droppings.
Made it to the Mercat where Jim Hannah and self did a few wee jobs about the palce for graham.
Hoeading home this afternoon a young boy, about 9 yeasrs walked straight off the pavement with out looking and was very nearly knocked down by the car in front of me. The driver got a terrible fright, especially when there was a pedestrian crossing within ten yards. Young lad got a very polite earful from me!! who also nearly ran into the car in front.
Had Edwardo on the phone, he leaves next tuesday for Argentina where he plans to stay witrh friends and look for work, we shall all miss him as he has been a good friend, genuine, apart from being a great artist, etc, and responsible for most of Graham's art work, not to forget his skills in the kitchen as it was he who set up the Mercat kitchen from day one.

That dirty word - work

Short entry this morning as I am up and heading off to The Mercat to do some work there with Jim Hannah who is coming through from Bishopriggs. That will be a blast as I have not seen him for months.

Weather is fine so I think it is time to air the motorcycle, at least I will get parked and through the traffic.

Watched the documentary on the Jonestown mass suicide in 1978 in Guayana - although iteresting it was frightening to think how much power that manic wielded over his "followers" and to orchestrate the musder of the US Senator before convincing everyone to take cyanide - just terrible. I woke up at 2 a.m. with nightmares.

Also saw the "wife swap" last night with Samantha Fox and Freddie Star, he is just a useless lump and God knows what he had been taking, he looked and sounded stoned half the time - he certainly did not come over well, pity his poor wife Donna and the kids.

I managed to get a good photo of hundred of the birds which swarm over the house at night, so when get the chance it will posted.

Good one Mr. Karabin ( who actually managed an E mail), we look forward to seeing you and Bonnie either 2008 or 2009. And thanks for the text Jeremy - your message passed on.

Sunday sunshine

Well - after a shockin, awful, terrible day on Saturday - weather wise, it is nice to see some sunshine this morning . A bit blustery, but not cold, so I was able to get out into the fresh air, tidy the car, sort a cracked bumper on the Ford where some kind person had reversed into it in the car park at Sommerfield's. ( great stuff the old cataloy paste.

Fired up the motorbike, which started first turn even after a month of inactivity in the garage - I will need to get it on the road when I get the chance.

Yet another nice blast from the past, having made contact with a friend, Howard, in London who used to get me work up here on his behalf. His catch phrase so to speak when he phoned looking for me was to say to Ann " Is he in or is he down the Glen". Which, in view of what I was doing at the time was exactly where I was.

Sparky Mark, left at 4 a.m. this morning from Edinburgh, via London to Madrid then on to Cuba to start his cycling adventure. He did not even have bicycle clips!!! but said he would use masking tape instead.

Looks like we are in for some visitors shortly, some of Ann's friends are coming round to cheer her up - so they say.

Moving on in time - two in and out and another two back in, good chat and Sheena and Paul are off on an Ocean Village cruise in a couple of weeks to the Carribean - I did not realise that you cannot get an all inclusive drinks package on that boat.
Paul had used his Sat Nav in the car which took hiom past the out and out into the countryside about a mile from here - then came back and they ended up in my back lane, having passed the front of the house already.

In between we have watched John and Sinead Kerr from Livingston skating in the European Championships. They were good but she had a small tumble which cost them points.

Need to move on and do some work.

A hectic 18 hours

What a diference it makes getting out and about - lots of wee adventures and thngs to see.

Took myself off to town on the bus Friday p.m., and made it up to The Standing Order, looking for Archie. He was in a meeting so while I waited I partook of the "vino tinto" and blethered to some of the former beer club members, and staff. Eventually the big boy himself appeared, brandishing his latest gift from the Fife Police safety camera iniative - so that will bea token fine and some points to adorne his licence. Transpired he had been taking Tracy to the Hospital where they received confirmation that the next set of tiny wee feet will be arriving around 080808. ( bit spooky) Well done and keep healthy.

Headed along to Frasers Store to exchange a x-mas present where I scored by changing it to something for me, and again had a wee chat to the girls who had been missing Ann's regular visits, looking for bargains and skooshes of Chanel. They have said they will try and read this blog.

Along to the Mercat to hand in the music for the Burns supper, a walk around the block in the rain to get the air, and back into the bar for another wee wine, before the reception. The whole place was busy. It was good, nice crowd of twenty five for the meal downstairs. Hannah was there, wearing her pink wellies, but she did change into proper shoes , Lillian and kenny, Chris , Ailsa, Elizabeth, Tam and Catherine., Mark and Jeremy along with our antipodean companions, and Keira, the piper and friends from the comedy club. It was a good night, the meal was excellent, well presented.

The x - factor winner, Leon Jackson was in the bar upstairs along with three or four friends, sitiing quietly talking. A very pleasant and polite young man, I hope he has another good record to follow up on his recent chart hit.

I eventually left about 12 mn with Jeremy and walked along Princes Street to the Balmoral where I caught a night bus home. There was a young couple , say about16/17 years sitting beside me and they were slugging away from a bottle of Absinth ( 68% proof).

Home , to bed, not feeling so well and ended up sleeping, sitting up (wraped in the now famous douvet) in the conservatory, as the heat and scent from the flowers was affecting my chest and breathing.

Popped down the stret this morning, about 11.30 a.m., saw three young guys, drunk, with glasses of spirit in their hands, refused service at Sommerfields, but were able to get another bottle at Victoria Wines. And they say publicans are irresponsible.

Graham got a lovely letter from Yvonne in Shetland who worked the Summer camps in the USA with him about ten years ago - it's nice to keep in touch.

Anyway, Mrs. B. much brighter today, thank goodness, I was gettig a bit worried after the last three days of her being under the weather .

Friday 25 January 2008

A haggis a day

I was kicking myself this morning, arrived at the local Tesco's to find two giant haggis dancing about at the entrance and tarten clad ladies dishing out leaflets all about haggis and Robert Burn's , Scotlands famous poet, whose memory is celebrated today. I had no camera with me and by the time I returned the two haggis had disappeared, possibly eaten by the hungry locals.

Tonight we are off to The Mercat Bar, where there is to be a special Burns supper, which if it is as good as the previous events will be excellent.

While I am out Ann plans to have her own wee Burns supper with the above haggis accompanied by mashed tatties and neeps. Obviously feeling a bit better today.

Weather is atrocious, pouring with rain and blowing a gale, with higher winds forecast for later on, however this did not deter Irish Christine from battling her way up to bring cream cakes and have coffee with us this morning.

Wee Story - I was listening to the wind this morning and thinking it was time to get back under the covers when I remembered this incident.
Many years ago when I was a young policeman here in Penicuik, there were a number of thefts of milk and bread which ws being left by the delivery men at the back of one of the shops. I decided to set up a "watch" and try and catch the culprits, so about 5 a.m. one cold morning, I set off to hide in a nearby garden and watch the shops. I also took with me my army sleeping bag and got into it and hid amongst the vegetables. The inevitable happened, cosy as toast, I fell asleep and only woke up when the dayshift Sergeant started calling for me on the radio at 8 a.m.
The householder was a wee bit surprised to see me rising from the vegetable garden as I scooted back to the office with some excuse as to why I was working overtime !!

Another (unfriendly) bird in my life

This fine looking swan was about to have a go at me yesterday at Musselburgh so I beat a hasty retreat.
Mrs B. has been much brighter as the day progressed which is good.
So much for a quiet day, I ended up back at Costco, then picked up Danny Graham so that we could have a blether, so he went to Bookers with me and we stocked up the kitchen at the Mercat for Claire and Graham - At least I know that there are beans and things available if I do not want the haggis tomorrow night - unlikely. We did well, but we commented on the escalating price of farm produce, butter, cheese, etc.
Wee bit steam coming out my ears on getting stuck in traffic at the ever increasing number of roadworks around the area.
Danny has inside information on the tram project and he reckons that the people who were working out the schedules have got it seriously wrong - they did not know that Shandwick place was one of the main routes into the city!! and from what I hear about the proposed alterations to bus routes, use of side streets, etc. it will be nothing short of a total nightmare for months.
managed to get the new battery fitted to the Escort, so that should resolve the problems there, the old one was fitted in 1996, so it has done pretty well considering. While doing it, the massive flock of birds which roost at night in the high hedges nearby were whirling about and I was hit on several occasions by their droppings - all the cars in the back lane get plastered every night.

Someone does read these

Pleased to see that someone does read these, Thanks Greg for the comment, nice to see that you are still keeping the hand in with the baby sitting, and to hear that Graham and Terri Briggs are fine and well as are the babies.

Weather here has been awful, last night strong winds, pouring rain, followed by a very dry and cold spell and now this morning we have just had sleet showers passing through. Ideal for me who needs to go outside and do some work , I think it will need to wait a bit longer.

Musselburgh Races were poorly attended yesterday with only about a thousand folk turning up, but there is a big family day coming up a week on sunday which should be different. I left the pub about 4.40 p.m. to get to the shops at home, and it apparantly got a bit busier ten minutes later. Nothing that Robbie could not cope with.

Mrs. B. did not have a good day yesterday, understatement, however she is looking a bit brighter this morning.

Could be a douvet day, but I need to start writing again - get my feet cleared once more before the next jobs come in.

Wednesday 23 January 2008

Lost yet another day

Wed now, I think, - just where did Tuesday go ?

Anyway, had to go to the Mercat yesterday morning for soup and haggis balls for the RA last night, en route discovered that the front brakes were binding badly on the Escort - front wheel was cooking.
Got home, via Costco, and then freed of a jammed brake piston, what a difference - so now I know what was causing all the problems. Garage got me a new battery, but it was the wrong model - so once gain last night car just started and no more - but, fingers crossed all will be well.

BMW has an ignition fault which turns out to be a common complaint and easily fixed - BUT WHY, with these cars you do not expect niggly problems.

Received an E mail from my long time friend from the Prince's Trust, Beth, now living in Shiply, Yorkshire. So we had a chat on the phone, the first for about six years, it was lovely to speak to her, get the gossip and news of the family.

Ann made it to the Doctors who thought she was doing well. Came home, made sandwiches for the RA last night, but once again has paid the price by being unwell again this morning.

RA went well last night with Grant of Photogenix becoming our latest member, quite a few missing as there was a special meeting of the KT's at Dunbar to celebrate 100 years of their Preceptory. However, those present had a good time - and were firt up to get a shot for the new Mark Tokens.

Bloody roadworks again - I heard on the radio that the council plans to spend the next eight weeks doing some work on giving buses priority between Straiton and Penicuik and that all the new bus stops will be built opposite keep left islands just to add to the congestion. For me , I am quite happy taking the bus into the City, but for start stop jobs you need the car.

Burns Supper at the Mercat on Friday night coming which should be good - looking forward to it.

Monday 21 January 2008

On the other side of the hills.

Woke up - teeming with rain, and later as forecast, the snow started, to such an extent that I did not think I was going to get off to the hospital with Ann. BUT - once we got about a mile down the road , no snow and in edinburgh, nothing , just a wee bit rain. Of course we then had the reverse coming home, hitting the snow line at 800 ft. Now melting - but with -3c forecast for a.m. things will be different.

Eventually relented and have purchased a new battery for the car as the old one has taken such a hammering with the weather, etc.

What a carry on at the hospital trying to get parked, took ages and only after I had dropped Ann off, with a one way system which means you need to drive about 2 miles round the block to get back in. Anyway, she had her CT scan, and as we were in early she was taken sharp and we were up and out to town before it got busy. As anticipated the effort was a bit much so Rip Van Wrinkle is now sleeping.

On the way in I spotted the second "shrine" at the roundabout at Milton Bridge, two fatal accidents within ten yards, on the new roundabout inside 18 months - that's now three within 150 yards all on newly altered and upgraded bits of the road !! so much for road planners.

I was watching the trailer of a documentary about a group of young volunteers who went out to a south sea island to help the natives, and they have done wonders, with some still living there - being green, eco friendly and self supporting - when I hear the news about the crashes on the stock market, threatened global recession, etc., I think they have the right idea.

Anyway, I am supposed to be working right now.

Sunday 20 January 2008

Its pure poetry

to follow on from last night, I eventually made it out into the open air for a four hour stint outside the door of the pub, where one is totally exposed to the whims of passing life and the smoking public.

For me who told the doctor that I did not smoke, this was a big fib, I must smoke about one hundred a night standing there surrounded in plumes of reek from the clientelle !! But what is more intersting is the social interaction!! which takes place between them and also with those standing outside the pub next door - none of this wandering along to chat, just shout at the top of the voice. And those there, sober, semi drunk, then drunk, same stories, questions, confusion - all adding to my need for some form of sedative. Of course, last night the fact that I was still having eyesight problems did not help.

Young lady, fitted with massive false eyelashes, like sunshades appeared with a number of her friends, out to celebrate her birthday. She wa about to light up her umteenth fag when this giant Hummer limo, PINK 1, appeared, much to her delight which led to a near knicker wetting session !!
Turned out the Limo was there to take her into Edinburgh for a party, so moments later she was out at the driver " hey gadgie, how do get into this fu***ing motor", then her and her ten friends were loaded up, shown where the booze was, music turned right uop and off they went.

My friend Willie arrived, complete with milk bottle specs, lovely wee chap, all the bus drivers, police know him, so when lost, staggering or just lying on the pavement he somehow manages to get home.

End of the night, was busy, made it home by 3 a.m. and Ann was sitting up waiting./

Long lie this morning, up , but Ann was keen to get some fresh air, so off she went to get the papers, full of fizz - but returned like a ghost - shattered, which put her back in bed for the rest of the day. Again - lesson learned - listen to your body, i.e. if your belly rumbles and bum smells go to the toilet.

P.M. down to Bonnyrigg for a R.A. meeting , set the tChapter up for Tuesday and have a wee meeting with those present - great - just super, these guys are so enthusiastic, keen, and helpfull.

Sparky was my driver, so back via Costco, where we bought beer, food, etc, and got home where we made the dinner for Ann.

Was watching "Time team" from Barra in the Outer Hebrides, just spectacular, and totally enthralling to think of the type of civilisation which lived there for over 600 years from 500 BC to 100 AD.
In Lewis there are the best beaches in Europe and some fo the best surfing waves in the World, but the sheer logistics and cost of getting there put thousands off the trip.

Tonight it was "Black Stump" Australian red to accompany my ribs and roast chicken.

Saturday 19 January 2008

Back on post

Saturday, having had a good sleep I was still up sharp, and agitated with lots of things needing done.

Surprised how cold it was when I found the car frozen solid, but managed to get it going and hit the shops. Eventually it became milder and I took myself out to have a go at getting the power sorted in the garage. Fiddled about for a bit, worked out that as long as I did not put on the lights, everything else would work !! Good one - so then I even cleaned up the place a bit and found some missing items buried beneath the rubbish.

Ann had obviously done too much on Friday so she ended up having a long snooze p.m. while i pottered.

Due to no doorman at the pub tonight, I am "it" so an early tea "pork loin chops" were had.

Made it to Musselburgh where, after an absence of 17 days, nothing had changed !!! Now all set for an exciting night in the cold, which will no doubt do my chest and cough a world of good.
But no doubt Kerrin, Karen and Elaine will look after me.

Friday 18 January 2008

Foggy wet day

Early start this morning, 5 a.m. on the M8, nd it was raining and miserable, which was the general picture for the whole day.
Met with Fraser, got my tea cup filled and headed south, stopping at Carlisle. Car was sounding a bit strange but it still made the trip , however, will need to get it checked out.

It rained most of the way south with poor visibilty which made for slower driving times / speeds, but that did not deter quite a few who were certainly doing in excess of 80 m.p.h. in very , very poor visiibility. Due to being slower I had no hold ups so it makes a difference being able to maintain a constant speed.

At Runcorn, thought that the baillifs had been in at Jill's front Reception, which was stripped bare obviously prior to a big redecoration. Poor Jill was full of the cold, but she was going to prepare herself a good hot toddy, with lemon, honey and whisky!! to combat the bug.

Managed to get my bacon roll set aside in the cafe, but Canteen Christine warmed it in the toastie machine and crushed it flat. still a nice snack.

As I was till not feeling 100% and knowing that there were going to be massive delays on the M74 near Lesmahagow I had opted not to take anything home and cut off via Moffat on the A701, which was a good run except for a couple of tourist types who were wanting to admire the scenery. Anyway made it home in one piece but was much in need of a sleep.

Ann was up , dressed and pottering about, feeling a bit better, and even managed to make the dinner while I snoozed- which is a hopefully a good sign.
Had an E mail from a from an old friend who used to work in Brussels and who is now based in Singapore, so if I ever want a night out !!

Thursday 17 January 2008

Lost a day - again

I did not realise that i had missed out Wednesday - just so busy.

Dave and I had breakfast at the Craigibield Hotel where he was staying and headed through to Eurocentral to do a job there in a new , massive, production plant. One year old, totally spotless, and a credit to the staff and management. Wound up one of the mnagers a wee bit, but he enjoyed the banter.

Headed home sharp, changed, made sure Ann was OK, and then headed into the Mercat for a sizzling steak - VG + , then home with Graham and Dave to the Craigie to watch the football along with a drink or three.

Late to bed and up early again for the off once more with dave, To Roslyn Chapel for a promised visit, bit cold but for once the place was a bit quiet and we had room to move and take our time. to Bonnyrigg to get Grant at Photogenix to do some work for me, then to Livingston via the airport to drop of Dave who was heading south. He was caught up in the massive flight delays caused by the plane crash at Heathrow.
Had a much longer than expected meeting in Livingston, so by the time I headed home the traffic on the City by pass was building up. North/ westbound was a nightmare as a lorry had shed its load at the end of the M8 at hermiston Gait and there were big tail backs.

By the time I got home I found that Annhad had a bad day, still in her PJ's and not feeling so good - but this is to be expected.

I am rather knackered and will need an early bed as I am off again at 4.30 a.m. to Runcorn once more - but this time my eyes are getting better instead of worse, so that is the difference 15 days makes.

Tuesday 15 January 2008

Day in the city

Long day and I was not as bright as I thought, and neither was Ann who apparantly slept all day, apart from when her sole visitor arrived.

Had problems getting the car started, some kind of weird electrical fault, then it was iced up and frozen, but I made it to the airport, when on collecting Dave, popped him straight behind the steering wheel and we set off to Glasgow. Parked at Cowcaddens, wandered through John Lewis, stopped for coffee and made it to the Queens Street Offices for 10 .m.

Interesting site visit which kept us going till 3 p.m. when we eventually headed back to where the wise men came from (East), not realising that the we had missed the excitement of the bendy bridge over the Clyde ( which came with a 100 yr) guarantee had started to fall to bits. Lot to be said for good British workmanship - just what would the Romans have made of it all.
Thinking along the same lines the bulding we had been in, has the two sets of double front doors open all day , because they do not close properly - so the two staff working in the main front reception area are living in a freezing hole with gale force winds blowing through.

Anyway, made it home to Penicuik, where the patient was fed and watered.

Then discoverd that i had been ever so confused last night and had not wired up my emergency system to the garage properly, however due to the extreme cold the freezer was still frozen and the contents OK.

Had planned on making it to 720 tonight, however due to the present circumstances this was not realistic.

Some proverbs to think about.

"a closed mouth gathers no foot"

"Never eat yellow snow"

"If at first you don't succeed - then you probably shouldn't try skydiving"

Up , Up and away

Early rise againtoday, but I have to head for the airport to collect Dave from Maidstone, then through to Glasgow where we have two days work.

Ann feeling a bit better, good -as she will have to fend for herelf most of the day.

Good news is that my wabbit eye is coming back to life, so another day or so should se a remarkable transformation - which is good as I have my long run to Runcorn again.

Power problems in my garage, possibly water into something - but no power at all - have rigged up a temporary fix from the house, so hopefully Sparky marky will have dreamt up some kind of solution overnight.

Off now

Monday 14 January 2008

Running a bit behind

Had the chance to write this at 5 a.m. , but that was a bit OTT - I was busy reading anyway as I could not sleep.

Been out and about this morning, with essential jobs backing up and needing done, and as i have four days of work I need to get motivated. Did a fair bit of blethering as I met a few folks I have not seen for ages. Bob Cardy grandad yet again, and he still looks as youthful as when i first met him about 30 years ago - congratulation to him and Catherine.

Mrs. B. seems to be a bit tired today and has only been downstairs for about an hour, rest of the time spent in the land of nod.

Back to basics tonight, as I am making the dinner it is good old fashioned mince and mashed tatties. No frills and it beats lasagne or spagetti bolognaise anytime.

No respite from this rain, looks like it will be wellie weather for a while more - so anther excuse to get on with some work.

Sunday 13 January 2008

Bears no relevance

Just thought you might like this photo of a wee scabby kitten I saw in Bombay, one eye, (just like mine) was closed and it was living on scraps.
Today, Mrs. B. has already been up and down a bit - was fine earlier but thenhad to retreat to bed again.
Blowing a gale outside, raining and grey, so it could be another duvet day. Just makes you wish you were somewhere sunny, like St lucia, Barbados, etc.
Watched the replay of Jools Holland's, New Year Show, "Hooten Annie", last night - it was great, with Mika, Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, etc, really good entertainment and excellent music.

Saturday 12 January 2008

Brass monkey morning

Bloody chilly last night, even the brass monkeys were holding onto their assets this morning.

Mrs. B. in better fettle today - with a couple of visitors ( Doreen and Carol) to keep her occupied while I was out.

Gas board are working in Bog Road, but they are not as bad as this lot were, and this was allegedly a busy dual carriageway.

Went to town with Graham and popped by to see Chris's Ma at Fairmilehead. At 2.30 a.m. some mindless twats flung large rocks at her newly fitted front windows and smashed three of them. Fortunately they were double glazed so the stones did not get through to the rooms. this is the second time in two weeks, and I heard that other neighbours had had their windows put in three times recently . So much for living in a so called nice bit of the town.

There was a nice wee crash at the Pavilion Restaurant where someone had obviously had a super spin on the black ice and ended up through a hedge and into the front of an electric sub station.

Graham off to work, but with Edinburgh rugby playing and a birthday party tonight, he was not planning on driving !! So far he has worked sixty hours this week, so we will not begrudge him a beer tonight.

Friday 11 January 2008

Tea time report

Not been such a good day today for Mrs. B. spent most of the time in bed - which is just as well as it is freezing outside again.

Plenty flowers, lovely, to brighten the house up, so I had to scoot off down the street and get another vase.

Been trying to get organised, because irrrespective of whats going on I will need to do some work in Glasgow next week for a couple of days. - But things should have improved a little by then .

Was reading the Indian Newspaper !!! and see that in a recent sting operation in Delhi 64 Traffic Police were filmed taking bribes from bus drivers.
We do not have that problem here, there are probably not enough English speaking drivers here to know what the Police are saying to them.

Had a dry night last night, think another cheeky little Australian Red is called for this evening.

A touch of Klass.

This was where I had my last haircut, whilst in Bombay, The lad did a good job, but despite the fact I have little on the top the head the rest needs sorted again.
They thought it was good of me to visit their salonwhere I had a shave, haircut, head, back massage, etc, all for £3.
This morning,I am still one eyed, Ann is asleep, having been restless during the night, and Graham is away back to see the nurse - we are certainly making god use of the NHS!!

Thursday 10 January 2008

Well fed

We have just had our tea, fish from the firm who supply the Mercat which is big and tastes wonderful - a tasy treat.

The rains have stopped, but as that bible song goes, the rains came down and the floods came up - so somewhere , someone will have wet feet, until the snow comes back again.

Today's party piece by a local eejit, and not to be repeated, take a kettle full of water, drop in an aerosol canister, put on the lid held in place with a milk bottle and then switch it on and walk away and listen for the bang!!!!

Unfortunately, two poor innocents walked in as the kettle exploded and were cut and slightly burnt.

Sparky arrived with stuff I had left in his car and to brighten up Mr's B's day and see her before he heads north for a couple of days.

Quiet night now - I hope, but missing out on my visits, tonight should have been Dalkeith.

Duvet day - maybe

Me - very restless night, while Ann slept OK - had to waken her at 6 a.m. to pop her pills.

Anyway, having come down and looked out at the weather and pouring rain, first the floods then the pestilence, I now know why folks have duvet days. It is very tempting just to go back to bed and pull the covers over your head. The forecast is not too clever either.
With no natural light the SAD syndrome can easily overwhelm one.

Andrea sent a text last night to say she had made it home safely to Milwaukee, and was missing us already, probably my toast and egg sandwiches.

Had the brakes fixed on the VW Chevanne during the last two days. Ian the mechanic, was saying that it was more expensive to repair than the BMW and his garage only charges £62 per hour labour !!!!

I see that yet another chap in the USA has hit the headlines, having apparantly murdered his three young children by throwing them off a bridge and into the sea - just what kind of world do we live in?

This mornings advice - " always keep tubes of haemorrhoid cream and Deep Heat rub well separated in the bathroom cabinet".

What a difference a day makes, and

7 p.m., and Mrs B is certainly a bit brighter than yesterday - understatement !! she has has several trips downstairs, eaten pretty well, even by her standards, and managed a good kip this afternoon. Now back in bed, - so far not up to phone calls and has been able to cope with my company - when she sees me as I have been taking the chance to catch up with work.

She was not happy with my flower arrangements, something about carnations in a milk bottle not being aesthetically pleasing - I am sure that is what she meant.

Winds have died down , but we did some snow this afternoon, and from the news there has been plenty of chaos with the Road bridges being closed to traffic all day.

Sparky Mark called, has had a bad back and pains in his buttocks, but his chiropractor kissed it better for him !!!- trapped nerves it was. Doreen was in and said she has a strange knocking in her pipes !! and asked if Mark was able to do a service for her - knowing him I am sure he would.

I see Kenny Ritchie has arrived in Scotland, complete with his phony accent, he is not even Scottish, and I think a bad piece of work - but only time will tell.

Police in the USA seem to be having problems interviewing the labrador dog which shot and killed its owner, Labs seem to have the knack of being able to jump onto the trigger as this is not the first tiome it has happened. But folks with guns should always obey the basic gun code and break the barrel when the weapon is down.

Surprised Grant from Photogenix has not been on, he is changing servers, or something, so i await his return.

Tonights treat whilst I compose a few more letters will be a nice full Australian red, Andrew McPherson's Full 15, 2006, oak aged, so I should be able to sleep better. Bit of a panic there, as I thought I had lost the corkscrew.

Backed a horse at Musselburgh today based on a tip from a so called jockey who was in the Sportsman's last night, but it is still running, as is the jockey who may well be responsible for the contents of big karen's handbag being missing after meeting them last night. Bag was found on the roof of his guest house where it had been flung out a top floor window and the phone had been used to make a number of calls before she had it call barred. Girls, remember, do not talk to strangers.

Gale force winds

What a night, it blew and blew, I thought the roof was coming off the house so had better check for damage as we had some last year. It seems that the local TV mast has been effected as we have no TV signals from terrestial TV this morning.

Up at 5.45 a.m. playing doctors and nurses to get the 6 a.m. medication for Ann, who is much brighter and has been up and on her feet, moving around and fussing about.

Now setting up my walkie talkies so that I can be paged !!! when needed and whilst around the environs of the house.

Graham off and running this morning, there is supposed to be a race meeting at Musselburgh today, but it will not be too pleasant unless the winds drop and sun comes out for a bit. I will still need to stick nearer the house for a couple of days so my helping is out the question.

At long last had a response from Greg and Bonnie in the USA, who like a few had lost this blog site and were unaware of my ramblings.

Just as an afterthought I hear that Briggsy is now a daddy , 2nd time round, and he has taken on another "Snap On" franchise, well done.

The word on the street

Latest news being that Ann was discharged and sent home at 12 m.d. It was decided that as the damaged veinhad repaired itself, she was as well sleeping in her own bed and taking her medication rather than lying in the hospital. Very very tired after all these restless nights on a noisy ward.

Bit of a stressful run home, with me being cockeyed and ann tired, however, six hours of sleep has settled her down again.

Now raining heavens hard, so after the snow and frost comes the flood - we must have been terribly bad when we were young.

Sods law, central heating has worked fine , but when I came home this afternoon it had gone off , however a bit of fiddling and it came on again.

Thats me.

What's new today !!!

Well , looks like Ann had a better nights rest in the hospital than I did here, so when she gets out I might look for a free bed!!

Up early to say cheerio to Andrea who is away on the big siver bird, winging westwards, home to Milwaukee, USA, where she starts her teaching practice in a few days. We will miss her.

Sparky Mark arrived easly doors with a card for Ann, looking to save 26p, and after his cuppa and breakfast. However, he was in contact with his fat controller who despatched him to the City to cause mayhem with the unsuspecting consumers. His life is one big adventure and we should be writing a book on the antics of a gas man(sorry , technition).

From the amount of junk mail coming through the post these days I am thinking of just putting the recycling bucket at tthe front door under the letter box - it is ridiculous.

Ill divided world, we are freezing our bo*****s off while in Australia they are having summer suns with intermittenet floods, and bush fires which have killed several folk so far.

Have just had bacon and toast which reminded me of the latest cannibal chappie in the USA, he murdered his girlfriend, chopped her up and phoned the Police, who on arrival found him cooking bits of her in a pot and having eaten some already.

Untill things settle down again and we get Ann back into a routine, looks like my masonic visits will have to be curtailed.

Ok, need to go get the patch back on as this seeing double is doing my head in this morning.

The people you meet

After the chaos of the morning, caused by the snow and several accidents all around the area which caused everything to rind to a halt.
I made it to town by bus, simple and free !! where i mey my brother in law, John and Chritine at the hospital; Ann was up on her feet, had eaten her first meal in 9 days and although dopey was taking an active part in all that was going on. She says ??? she will be out tomorrow - but!!!

Anyway, her fellow patient, an 82 yr old Polish lady , married 62 yrs to her huspand who is 88 today , was telling us how she helped him and his friend escape from the Germans during the war when they were captured in Poland. How her friends and family hid him until the Russians liberated the area, just facinating.

I had to walk part way back to the Mercat, as our City Fathers have authorised yet more road works in the Haymarket area and the place was grid locked at tea time. Sat for a while with Graham and co but decided to head for home rather than sit in the pub and wait for the new session of The Comedy Club to start, hope it deos well.

Cannot even be bothered with my wine tonight.

Snow's been falling - again

5 a.m. - winter wonderland in Penicuik.
8.30 a.m. - total chaos, as no one takes the bus when it snows, they get in thier car and sit in a massive queue trying to get into the town which will take a couple of hours, and where there is no snow !! as usual it is also customary to drive with as much snow piled on top of the car as possible to prove that you are related to Nanook of the North - or just a frigging eejit.

Called the hospital - seems that a good night was had by Mrs B. which is more than can be said for Mr. B. It would appear that she will be there for another couple of days as they wish to take more pictures of (the butterflies in) her head !! - just to be sure everything is fine, that is.

Will add more later as Junior wishes to use the PC.

0915 - they are still sitting in a queue !!!

Sunday 6 January 2008

A wee bit better

Mrs B was a bit brighter this afternoon but certainly wont be back at work this week - and no idea yet when she is coming home.

had to go shopping for new PJ's for her so hit Matalan's 75% sale and got two pairs - which she liked !!! surprise , surprise.

Popped into the Mercat where Clair rushed to make me a lovely bacon roll as I was in need of sustinance. She had been in to see Ann last night and they had had a good laugh.
Graham, Andrea and self hit the ward where Graham made a patch for my bad eye out of a torn envelope and we drew an eye ball on it - so there were four fruitcakes all the same place at the same time.

Irish C. and Joe appeared so that livened things up a bit, and let us away to get on with other things.

Still contemplating which bottle to open tonight when captain calamity@ sparky Mark appears.

I hear that Chick set off from Musselburgh yesterday with a bag of doughnuts, heading for the hospital but got on the wrong bus and ended up at The Mercat !!

Obviously busy

Just tried to phone the hospital , but staff must be busy - so working on the principle that no news is good news I hung up and will wait till I go in to see what is happening.

Had a bit of an adventure last night, touring Australia through the media of two different red wines, with the resultant deep slumber, six hours which is really good for me. Fortunately no ill effects this morning.

Hit the keyboard last night so there might be a couple of Council Officials jumping up and down on Monday morning. There is no doubt that the constant stress they have caused us has not helped, so if Ann is stressed, I am stressed they might as well get a taste also.

Feels like mince

Mrs B said this afternoon " I feel like mince", all watery and runny, not sure if she was on about her bowels or just the wobbly state of her legs.

Still has headaches, was feeling sick, but I do not think she will be back at work on Monday - probably not even out the hospital (hopefully) which will give me another couple of days to get the house organised.

Despite Irish Christine's best efforts last night Ann did not have a relapse, although it did look that way.

Raining cats and dogs but iIthought it a bit of an overkill to arrive in boots, leggings, cagoul, etc, when I had taken the car and only had to walk 50 yards to the door. But I did get caught out with the football traffic coming home - why these Hearts supporters cannot leave early when their team is being beaten rather than stand and be miserable right to the end , then congest all the roads. Me I was having a pink fit in the car, seeing double and ranting like a madman - what's new.

Good job I have this AOL phone thing, I can chat all day to land lines in the UK for nowt.
Off now to the phone once again.

Friday P.M. report

Well, things are a bit brighter tonight. Ann had an angieagram done this morning and there is hardly any damage at all - she even saw the inside of her head and could pick out the butterflies !!! so she said. Cerainly looking a lot better and - believe or not even suggested that she might be going in to work next week - I think not. I was not able to find out much more but Irish Christine is away in tonight - so if she does not cause Ann to have a relapse she may find out something later.

I did as Iwas bid, and saw the Nurse this morning who after 20 minutes decided I go see the Dr. who after another 20 minutes sent me in for a chest x -ray as I would not go in for anything bigger under the current situation. X-rayed later on then walked down to the Mercat, and then over to the Hospital, my 60 mins worth of exercise.
Met a chap in the other hospital who told me his wife had suffered the self same thing, thought she had been bashed over the napper with a baseball bat, but she was up and raring to go within a few days and has made a full recovery, which was good to hear.
Brought the car back from the town as the snow has now had a big fright, and having now fed myself , feel a great deal brighter than last night.

Robbie @ kangaroo kisser and Sir Christopher are doing well, keeping everything ticking over whilst the three B's are on sick parade, cheers chaps, and that goes for everyone else on the team.

Another day, and snow

Ann is getting more tests this morning, had a good night apart from the headaches!!!

This was the scene from the front door at 08.20 a.m., however it is thawing and snow is melting, it was a lot worse last night. Another couple of hours and traffic will be moving freely again.

Coughing fit to burst so I have been ordered to see Dr also and "get it sorted" - or else. Still seeing double and that is not the drink either.

Thursday 3 January 2008

2nd time round and I am tired

Made a bit of a cock up when I wrote this up , hit the wrong key and lost the original - Ann now in hospital with a blood clot to the brain - she should have beensent in on saturday but was convinced that it was due to too hot a bath causing her blood pressure to fall and then NHS 24 lady who did the telephone analysis said it was the dreaded flu bug.
Anyway she is now in the best place and the next few days will prove this - Dr's say this was a "near miss" on this occasion

My friend Jill

Up early this morning , off to Glasgow to meet Fraser who had only a couple of drugs jobs for me . very strange the wee lady who had £40.000 in her suitcase at the railway station Despite the delays I do not think anyone needs to pay that much to get from Edinburgh to Manchester.

Motorway was very quiet due to people taking extended days for the New Year, butI picked up a hitch hiker at Carlisle, a young Polish chap, Michael, who works in Bar 101 in Birmingham - he was a graduate over here to learn English. Seems that the bar is quite upmarket and had a great selection of whiskys, vodkas and gins, etc. eventually dropped him off at J 23 to make his way home.

Arrived at Runcorn to a nice welcome from my pal Jill in Reception wo had been reading the blog and knew what had been going on here in the highlands. This has to have been the quickest turn round for me, possibly 10 minutes, then over for a roll and bacon from the terrible two in the canteen - apologies to the girls but I was not feeling at my best.

headed north and then heard from Graham that Ann was being being taken to hospital, however, due to the weather I had no option but remain calm and take it easy , so I took the longer route home and actually had no snow till I reached Penicuik - read on.

Wednesday 2 January 2008

Never ending .

Wednesday night now, and I have been busy all day - 1st phone call of the year from down south was with a little work later in the month, which is good news.

Next it was off to the pub to sort out a couple of minor problems and get the December paperwork to sort out for the book keeper / accountant.

Someone has gone OTT with bird food for our adopted pigeon, there is enough grain and seed on the pavement to keep a hundred birds going.

Ann still not much better, Graham still has his headaches and I am feeling rough again. So not a cheery prospect with a 500 mile drive in the morning and all the forecasts are for snow. But , like a good scout I have extra clothes, etc, packed in the boot.

Otherwise, nothing wise or sensible to add.

Tuesday 1 January 2008

Happy New year

Well, it is all over now - so to everyone all the best for 2008.

Our evening / night at the Sportsmans went well, nice wee crowd in, well behaved and in good humour apart from one young lady who fell out with her beau at the end off the evening, but Mummy and aunties were present so it was kept under control.

I do not think it was as busy as in past years, however, everyone present seemed to have a nice night and all left quietly by 2 a.m.

James @ Squirrell was in good fettle and thanked me for his dinner on x-mas day so I just said " write a thank you letter on a a £5 note" so that is just what he did, I think I will frame it.

Graham had the BBQ up and running at the Mercat, doing a roaring trade in sausages and rolls, but the smoke from the BBQ was wafting into an open window in the flats above and kept setting off their smoke alarm, so the occupants came down, joined in the merriment and had a complimentary drink for their troubles.

Ann is still ill, but nurse thinks it is a eally wicked flue virus.

Robbie has appeared with the BBQ so must go meantime.
